Navigating
a new identity

This Project Highlights

my ability to develop a refined brand identity through conceptual thinking and visualsymbolism. The brief was to create a complete logoredesign for Canoe, a fine-dining restaurant in Torontoknown for its contemporary interpretation of Canadiancuisine. The goal of the redesign was to create avisual identity that reflects the restaurant’s missionof celebrating seasonal Canadian ingredients whilereinforcing its refined, fine-dining experience.

the concept

was inspired by the restaurant’sconnection to the landscapes of Canada. Canoe encourages guests to explore Canadian cuisinethrough regional ingredients and relationships withlocal farmers, producers, and artisans. This idea ofexploration became the foundation of the identity, linking the dining experience to Canada’s vast naturalenvironments and culinary diversity.

during the exploration

phase, I focused on visualelements that could represent both the landscape andthe idea of discovery. The final logo uses angular linesthat resemble mountain peaks and distant horizons, referencing the panoramic views experienced from therestaurant while also evoking the natural scenery foundacross Canada.

While the canoe is the central symbol of the identity: itis historically used to travel through Canada’s rivers andlakes, it represents exploration, connection to nature, and a journey across the country. The addition of therestaurant’s name, Canoe, improves the readability ofthe abstract counter while also creating the visual of acanoe moving across water.

The fine-line design reflects the refinement of finedining, emphasizing precision and attention to detail.

the identity

remains minimal and flexible: when thetypography is removed, the linework still reads as anabstract Canadian landscape, while the wordmarkalone clearly identifies the restaurant. The logoalso works well on natural textures such as wood, reinforcing the brand’s connection to forests, nature, and Canadian heritage.
